Weekly Must Haves

Grocery shopping is done weekly in our house. The Portuguese shop more frequently at smaller neighborhood grocery stores.

Like you, I have some items that are must haves each trip to the store.

Like.....

Milk....It comes in boxes like this and you refrigerate it once you've opened it. "Magro" is the fat free version. The expiration date on this milk is September of 2009! (Just doesn't seem right does it?)

Once we open a box of milk we put it in this glass container for storage in the fridge. Also pictured from left to right is sour cream, drink box of chocolate milk (also bought at room temp) and bacon pieces. I use the bacon when I cook dried beans.

Flour, butter, dried beans and dried pasta. We don't have the choices like we did in the States so we've got to get creative with these items on a daily basis. Have any recipe ideas?

This is my "office"

And isn't this fruit dish lovely! A sweet lady in our church painted it for me....but that banana looks nasty, sorry about that.

Your shopping list looks very similar to mine. And we get those milk carton´s here too. I love that you can buy a dozen at a time and not have to worry about storing them in the fridge until you open them.

Hey Neighbor! That milk looks vaguely familiar. We don´t have that brand but the boxes took us a while to get use to as well. ;)

Love your office!

ooo.. just wrote a whole bunch and it got deleted!

Well, I love this idea of posting your groceries! It would be great if more of our supporting church members would read our blogs so they can get a real feel for what missionaries have to adapt to.

thanks for your sweet words and encouragement on my blog too! I´m with ya girl on the weight loss! Let´s do it!

Does the milk taste normal? I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the expiration date!

I am really enjoying your posts about life in Portugal. So interesting!

We can buy milk in a box here, too, but are not crazy about how it tastes. We were able to find a dairy farm not far from our house, so we buy milk there instead.

Your fruit dish is beautiful! What a sweet gift. :o)

That banana isn't too bad. I made a dish with white beans for dinner tonight. It had sausage, pasta, diced tomatoes and beans. If it sounds good and you want the recipe, let me know.

That box milk doesn't seem right. It just shouldn't be that way.

We have the same computer!! hahaha.
We have the same kind of milk here,Matthew doesn't like the taste of it though. The girls and I are fine with it but we did find some fresh milk for my husband that is pasteurized and tastes like in the States. I see you shop in Dia, do you guys have Mercadona? The fresh milk is from there.

Ladies,

The milk is pretty nasty. We use it for cereal and I use it in coffee and it's ok to cook with. Other than that, no one drinks it by itself. My kids drink it with chocolate powder mixed in....but they'd drink anything with chocolate powder!

In Brazil the milk also comes in a box. Fresh milk has to be bought from a farmer, but it's not pasteurized. You have to do that yourself. Tim doesn't like to drink milk anyway, so it's not a problem for him. I only use milk to cook or bake with. I'm with the majority, there's just something wrong about milk that doesn't have to be refrigerated!

As far as recipes, I don't really use them when I cook, just to bake. But it's cold/cool there right now, right? You can try some variations of soups with the beans. Just be creative!

Wow! Milk in a box. Scary! At least your peeps have found one of life's absolute truths....if you don't like something, try it with a little chocolate.

I'm loving your new backgounds.

I love that fruit dish! Think this sweet lady would paint your MOM one? With some greens and yellows? to match the kitchen?

We call that LONG LIFE milk here and it's also not the milk of choice in this house. I only buy it if we're going into Kruger Park or something.

And are those black beans!? Being from TX, I miss my Mexican food. We try to bring bags of dry beans back with us whenever we go to the states. Funny the things you miss when they aren't so readily available!

I actually found a BBQ recipe I wanted to try. I'll have to do that and then let you know how it turns out!

WOW, that is so cool how long you can keep your milk.

Hmm...I've never heard of milk in a box! That's interesting...

That banana looks like it needs to be made into banana bread! :-)

The box of milks seems of different. Does it taste the same as in the states? I go to the store once a week also. Looks a lot like what you get.

Hey that milk looks familiar but I'm a bit jealous that you have nonfat milk.

That was a fun look at your grocery list.
